Welcome to the BiH Environmental Reporting Portal!

This portal serves as Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH) joint, comprehensive, and user-friendly online platform for navigating and understanding our state level environmental reporting obligations. It is an integral component of the broader Integrated Environmental Management System (IMS), which is being established to strengthen BiH's capacity to meet its international environmental commitments, particularly those stemming from the European Union (EU) integration processes, EIONET - European Environment Information and Observation Network (the partnership network of the European Environment Agency - EEA), EUROSTAT, and various international conventions.

Our Purpose and Vision

The primary purpose of this portal is to provide a transparent and accessible overview of BiH's environmental reporting landscape. It is specifically designed to assist the country-wide EIONET system and other relevant authorities in performing a comprehensive gap analysis and mapping of current and future reporting obligations against our local EIONET structure and institutions. This "mapping" aspect focuses on the identification and organization of reporting obligations, rather than primarily on spatial visualization of data. By doing so, it facilitates the estimation of the scope of work and methodologies required for each reporting obligation, with a particular focus on priority data flows and existing international commitments. The portal will function as a metadata collection store, providing structured information about these obligations.

What You Will Find Here

As a joint repository for environmental reporting obligations, this portal offers a wealth of information and functionalities, tailored to various users, including the public, decision-makers, and environmental professionals:

  • Comprehensive Overviews: Access detailed methodologies for each reporting obligation. For a set of core data flows, these methodologies are particularly comprehensive, covering aspects such as data collection, verification, exchange, and reporting. They also include essential metadata based on a data dictionary.
  • Structured Information Access: Navigate the complex hierarchies of reporting obligations with ease, thanks to a robust Content Management System (CMS) featuring faceted search and dynamic filtering capabilities. You can effortlessly search and filter information based on various criteria, including environmental topic, reporting frequency, the responsible institution, and the specific legal instrument from which the obligation derives.
  • Historical Contributions and Supporting Documents: The portal serves as a repository for BiH's historical contributions, allowing to explore previously delivered datasets and reports. It also provides access to relevant supporting documents such as official methodologies and reporting formats.
  • Illustrative Data Visualization: While its primary role is not spatial data storage, the portal may incorporate basic geo-mapping features for illustrative purposes, especially for already delivered data flows (e.g., air quality data), to visually enhance understanding.
  • User Guidance and Support: Comprehensive rules, procedures, user manuals, and guidelines are integrated into the portal to assist all user groups in understanding its functionalities and their respective roles and responsibilities.

Commitment to Transparency

In alignment with the principles of the Aarhus Convention, this web-based database is designed to be openly accessible to the public, to the extent agreed upon with our beneficiaries. Our ultimate goal is to transparently demonstrate the full scope of environmental obligations that lie ahead for Bosnia and Herzegovina in its EU accession process and to clearly show the progress made in fulfilling these crucial commitments.

We invite all stakeholders, interested parties, and the public to explore the portal and engage with the vital information it provides, contributing to a more informed and capable Bosnia and Herzegovina in its environmental journey!
